THE EDITOR, Sir:
AS AN educator myself, I am appalled at the murders of my fellow educators.
In the space of a week, two of my colleagues have been brutally slain. The first was Boscobel Primary's principal, Manning Marsh, who I understand, was killed when an assailant just walked on to the school premises and took his life.
Now, one Delta Bailey of Windward Road Primary and Junior High, was killed because of a dispute over a bicycle which her nephew apparently left in her care.
Now, while one does not know the real reasons for Mr. Marsh's killing, what is given of Miss Bailey's death is something next to madness.
My main concern in these reports is - I don't want to say lack of adequate security - the way someone can just walk on to a school compound and demand to see a teacher, et al. And often the intent is to harass and attack verbally, emotionally and even phsyically.
As far as I know it is the only business place that this can be done. This just goes to show, as a nation, our scant regard for education and its practitioners.
Our society needs to make its educators more financially autonomous. I also suggest a stronger show of appreciation for our educators, starting with (1) stop killing and harassing us (2) pay us better (3) provide better security at schools.
I am, etc.,
