Grant captures hurdles gold medal

JAMAICA'S CHRIS Grant struck gold at the 16th World Masters Athletics Championship in San Sebastian, Spain, capturing the 400m hurdles in 53.71 seconds to gain Jamaica's first medal.

Grant competing in the age group 35-39, "ran a fantastic final stretch to overtake a fading Don Drummond (USA)," said Lyndie Headley, vice-president Jamaica Masters Athletic Association JMAA) on Saturday. Drummond was second in 54.37.

TEAM MEMBERS

Jamaica is being represented by five athletes at the championships, which started on August 22 and will conclude on Saturday, September 3.

The team includes: Benson Ford, (70-74 group), in the 100 and 200 metres; William James, (55-59 group), in 100, 200 and 400 metres; Karl Smith, (46-49 group), in the 100 metres hurdles; Janet Strudwick Smith, (40-44 group), in the 10,000 metres.

The World Masters Athletic Championships are held every two years beginning with age groups from 35-39.

In Puerto Rico, two years ago, the eldest competitor was 100 years old who ran the 100 metres.
