Special day for the NPL champions
published: Wednesday | August 31, 2005

THIS SATURDAY has been declared Portmore United Day by Portmore Municipal Council, Mayor George Lee announced at a press conference at his office yesterday.

"This is an event that we are proud about. Saturday, September 3, will be Portmore United Day. We are doing this because we think that the team performed brilliantly during the last season," said Lee.

"They were spectacular performers. They won nearly every competition and I think that is a remarkable string of victories for one team in one season. We will be celebrating this and at the same time wish them the best for the coming season," he said.

Wayne Sinclair, chairman of Portmore United FC, said his club "wanted to thank and commend the mayor and the municipality of Portmore for extending such a gracious event to Portmore United Football Club.

"It's a family affair and we want to use Portmore United as a vehicle to galvanise the community as a positive source for social change," said Sinclair.

The Portmore United Day will be marked with a motorcade along the main thoroughfares in Portmore starting at the team's headquarters at Ferdie Neita Park in Braeton, St. Catherine, and ending at Ken's Wildflower Restaurant and Lounge in Bayside.

The motorcade is scheduled to get under way by 3:30 p.m. and the mayor is expecting thousands of supporters to line the streets in support of the Portmore United team that won all competitions entered in the 2004-05 football season.

Portmore United, formerly Hazard United out of Clarendon, won the Wray and Nephew National Premier League, the Red Stripe All-Island Knockout Championship, the National Under-21 tournament, the Red Stripe Light Beach Football and the Happy Sutherland Knockout competition.

The grand culmination at Ken's Wildflower Restaurant will see performances by well-known local artistes including Macho Kid, Gyptian, Captain Barkey, Admiral Tibet, Lorna Bennett and Jabez.

The event is spearheaded by the Portmore Municipal Council with assistance and sponsorship from Digicel, SportsMax, Jamaica Amalgamated Cable Systems, Anderson's Haulage Services and Wisynco.
