Gleaner face Carib Cement in clash
published: Thursday | September 1, 2005

DEFENDING KSAFA Business House Division One football champions The Gleaner will look to keep their hopes of defending their title alive when they take on Carib Cement at 3:30 p.m. today at the UWI Bowl Playfield.

This will be a rematch of last year's final which saw The Gleaner narrowly edge out the Cement Company 2-1 to claim the crown.

However, this time things are different and the cement company will be looking to turn the tables. They will be encouraged by a 3-1 victory earlier in the season when the sides met in the preliminary rounds and Carib Cement coach Paul Laidley will think that is a good basis to be confident.

NO WORRY

The defeat earlier this season does not, however, seem to be a major source of worry for The Gleaner team as history has shown that it usually plays its best games on the big occasions.

Today's semi-finals will certainly be just that. If the defending champions are to progress, the experience of key strikers Fabian Nethersole and Oneil Morrison will be instrumental in leading the team from up front.

The team could, however, suffer from the absence of veteran midfielder Audley Boyd, who may be missing from the line-up due to illness.

In the day's other semi-final, Sherwin Williams will look to get the better of the University of the West Indies when they meet at the Cable and Wireless Sports Club, also at 3:30.

UWI will go into the encounter knowing that they have already beaten Sherwin Williams once this season.

The final of the competition is scheduled to take place next Tuesday.
