Seeds shine at Guardian Life junior tournament
published: Thursday | September 1, 2005

THE SECOND tournament of the Guardian Life Open Junior Tennis Championship series came to a close at the Cane Ridge Resort, Ocho Rios, with many of the top seeds emerging victorious.

In the boys' Under-18 category things went as scripted as No. 1 seed Christopher Lawson defeated No. 2 Dwayne Alexander in the final, 6-4, 3-0 retired. With the victory Lawson maintained his spot atop the Guardian Life point rankings moving to 48 points, while Alexander remained second with 36 points.

With the absence of top seeded Rory Cha, Montegonian Andre Burrell, who missed the first tournament of the series, emerged to take the boys' Under-16 category. Burrell, another of the island's top ranked juniors, got the better of Orick Angus 6-4, 6-1 in the final. Angus had previously knocked off the No. 2 seeded Max Anguin in the quarter-finals.

WEINBEER DEFEATS CRUMBIE

Number two in the Under-14 rankings, Winfred Weinbeer, took advantage of the fact that top seeded Phillip Bond did not make the trip. Weinbeer, from Westmoreland, defeated Donovan Crumbie from St. James 6-0, 6-4 and moved to the top of the section's rankings with 42 points.

Even though the Under-12 No. 1 ranked player Joseph Ross decided to play in the Under-14 competition, No. 2 ranked Jordan Harris failed to take advantage.

Harris, though making it all the way to the final, once again had to settle for second best as he lost out in a tough 6-7, 7-5, 7-4 battle to No. 4 seeded Sheldon McIntosh.

The win moved McIntosh to the No .1 spot with 40 points while Harris remains a close second with 36 points.

In a combined girls' Under-16 and 18 competition, the Under-18s' top ranked Kacia Riley narrowly defeated the leading Under-16 player, Calasia Reid, 16-15 in a round-robin format which saw the games totalled.

The girls' Under-14 category and the boys' Under-10 section were not played.
