THE EDITOR, Sir:
AS A past student of Mount Alvernia High School I would like to say a big thank you to the Franciscan Sisters I met, while at that institution. Sister Joan Claire and Sister Angella were staunch disciplinarians who cared dearly for each and every one of their students. Sister Angella was the first mathematics teacher I met who made maths looked simple, and Sister Joan Claire challenged us every day to 'cast your bread upon the seas'. This was demonstrated to us when she became very involved in plight of the Haitains living in Montpelier.
A heartfelt thank you also to my other teachers at Mount Alvernia who made a big impression.
Miss Beckford who never forgot the name of a student and made learning history not an option but a must; Miss Hall who gave of her time, even after school hours, to make sure that the girls were all ready for their CXCs; Miss Vernon who could make bad voices sound great, and Mrs. Powell, a tower of advice and nurturing.
I challenge you to keep the school on the hill an institution we can continue to be proud of academically and otherwise. To the students, Ad astra per aspera.
I am, etc..
