A FEMALE traffic warden was shot and injured on the compound of the Hope Valley Experimental Infant and Primary School in St. Andrew yesterday, just three days into the new school term.
Corporal Natasha Green of the Constable Communication Network (CCN) said that the 35-year-old woman was sitting at the entrance of the school when she was approached by two armed men who opened fire at her.
Principal Murial Barton, shaken by the incident, told The Gleaner that classes were still in session when the incident took place. She related that the incident sent a shock wave throughout the school, affecting teachers, students and ancillary workers who were all crying.
JTA OUTRAGED
"The Jamaica Teachers' Association is once again expressing outrage at an attack on another education institution. This further highlights our call for effective security measures at all of our education institutions," said Ruel Reid, president of the association.
Dorrett Campbell, director of communications at the Ministry of Education, said it is regrettable that such an incident took place. "It seems that this is becoming a blatant war on schools, which only serves to underscore the depths of lawlessness that we have to contend with in this country," she said.
