Holmes named in England squad
published: Thursday | September 8, 2005

HOLMES

LONDON (Reuters):

DOUBLE OLYMPIC champion, Kelly Holmes, has been named in the England team to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne next February.

Holmes, who won gold medals in the 800 metres and 1,500 metres in Athens last year, was ruled out of last month's World Championships in Helsinki with an Achilles tendon problem, but is down to run both events in Melbourne.

If she competes it will mark her final appearance on the track, but the former army sergeant refused to speculate on her chances of making it to Australia after pulling up during the 800 metres at the British Grand Prix in Sheffield last month.

"We're not sure yet whether I'll need an operation or not," she said after the August 21 meeting. "I'll let that settle and get back into fitness."

Holmes has been blighted by injuries throughout her career. Once asked to describe them, she said, "Let's see - hips, femoral nerve, calcification of the hip bone, lower leg problems, shin problems, calf injury."
