We need better representatives
published: Tuesday | September 13, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I read a letter sent to you recently, 'Dem want to mash up yu legacy?', speaking of Mr. Patterson's legacy. The writer of that letter made mention of Highway 2000, but Highway 2000 came as a result of the taxes the Jamaican people paid. Furthermore, why take credit for something the people are entitled to?

I get upset when I hear people say, 'PNP give wi cell phone'. Any government in office in this age would have to make cell phones available to the people. A ruling party has no control over technology. People in any country, despite how poor, are drawn to global changes, especially where technology is concerned. Jamaicans are becoming more computer literate and many households are now equipped with a computer. I guess we are supposed to thank Mr. Patterson for that as well? Then what about the many schools without proper computer labs?

Mr. Patterson has given over the people of Jamaica to a company that will do anything to stay afloat and as a result the people are being exploited. The people of Jamaica live their daily lives with countless power outages while anticipating a huge light bill. Mr. Patterson must take the credit that his administration failed to do their research properly. Why allow a company that is reportedly bankrupt in the USA to run our electricity? That company's net profit for the quarter came as a result of the money they pumped from the Jamaican consumers.

There is hope for Jamaica as more die-hearted party supporters are beginning to accept the fact that it is time for a change of government. However, we need God to intervene that we may find the right individuals to lead us; not a PNP or a JLP government, but a set of individuals who love Jamaica and its people and are willing to represent the people at any cost.

I am, etc.,
