( left - right )GAYLE AND BREESE

LONDON, England, CMC

WEST INDIES batsman Chris Gayle slammed a typical whirlwind knock but Worcestershire were condemned to their eighth loss in the National Cricket League Division One, a five-wicket defeat at the hands of Nottinghamshire on Sunday.

The 25-year-old left hander smashed 25 from 28 balls, including three fours and one six, as Worcestershire made 200 for nine in 45 overs, after being sent in at Trent Bridge.

Ben Smith made 58 and Mark Davies scored 43 to engineer a Worcestershire recovery after they had slipped to 76 for four.

New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming then hit seven fours and a six in a sparkling 73 from 95 balls as Notts cantered to 204 for five in 41.2 overs.

At Headingley, Gareth Breese's Durham ensured their promotion to the National Cricket League Division One next season with a seven-wicket win over Yorkshire.

Breese, the Jamaica and West Indies all rounder, kept things tidy, conceding just 37 runs from his nine overs as Yorkshire rattled up 237 for five, with Anthony McGrath getting 68 from 79 balls.

In their turn at the wicket, Durham cruised to 241 for three off 43.2 overs with Gordon Muchall's unbeaten 101 being the highlight.
