( left - right ) THWAITES AND MUNROE
RONALD THWAITES, the former Central Kingston Member of Parliament who gave up the seat under controversial circumstances more than three years ago, will on Sunday make his bid to once again represent the violence-plagued constituency.
University professor Trevor Munroe will also on Sunday make his move on the St. Andrew Eastern constituency.
Both men, if successful, would most likely represent the People's National Party (PNP) in the next general election constitutionally due in 2007.
Two weeks ago when The Gleaner approached Mr. Thwaites after hearing of his interest in Central Kingston, the deacon and attorney was less than forthright in his response to questions regarding a renewed interest in the seat.
Yesterday, he said he would accept an offer to run only if he was nominated.
NO BURNING AMBITION
"I really don't have any burning ambition," he told The Gleaner yesterday.
But Colin Campbell, PNP deputy general secretary in charge of communication, confirmed yesterday that Mr. Thwaites would be Victor Cummings' arch rival. Mr. Cummings is the incumbent Member of Parliament.
Mr. Thwaites resigned just before the last general election in 2002.
Meanwhile, Professor Munroe, a trade unionist and government senator, is running against Dr. Winston Green and Peter Blake.
