Five struck by lightning, two die
published: Thursday | September 15, 2005

FIVE PERSONS were struck by lightning, two of them fatally, at a farm in Cousin's Cove district, Hanover, on Tuesday.

Dead are Johane Jones, 23, and 27-year-old Godfrey Martin. Injured are Kevin Dawes, 33, Dudley Willy, 26, all of Cauldwell District, and Nicholas Scarlett of Blenheim in Hanover.

According to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), about 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, the five men were at the farm during a downpour.

"The men were sheltering in a hut when they were struck by a bolt of lightning," a spokesman for the CCN said.

Jones died on the spot while the others were taken to the Noel Holmes Hospital where they were admitted. Martin later succumbed to his injuries.

This is the second incident in recent days where persons were struck and killed by lightning. Last Wednesday, 43 year-old Cenolin Williams of McNie district in Clarendon was killed when lightning struck her and three teenage boys. She was pronounced dead at hospital and the boys admitted in stable condition.
