published: Thursday | September 15, 2005

Gareth Davis, Gleaner Writer

POLICE IN Portland this week recovered a Tec 9 submachine gun in the vicinity of Barracks district in Manchioneal and arrested three men including a 13-year-old student.

The men arrested and charged in relation to the gun find are 24-year-old mechanic Christopher Walters, 17-year-old Bobby Newell and his brother, the 13-year-old student, all of a Thompson Pen address in St. Catherine.

According to police sources, at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, a white Toyota Corolla motor car was pulled over during a roadblock, and searched.

During the search, a submachine gun was found in the trunk of the car along with one 9 mm round. The occupants of the car were taken to the Port Antonio police lock-up where they were charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

All three accused appeared in the Port Antonio Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday, but had their case put off. They were also denied bail and remanded in custody.

Detective Sergeant Derrick Hart, at the Criminal Investigative Branch (CIB) in Port Antonio, said the gun, which was found is a high-powered weapon often used by gangsters.

It is the third illegal firearm to have been recovered by the Portland Police since the start of the year.
