St Thomas Tech crush Lightbourne
published: Thursday | September 15, 2005

Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

NEWCOMERS ROBERT Lightbourne were given a warm welcome to the ISSA Pepsi/JN daCosta Cup competition yesterday when they were hammered 8-1 by St. Thomas Technical at Eastern Bananas field.

Deshane Robinson scored twice for the former quarter-finalists as they rushed into the lead in Zone L of the competition after Seaforth High and Morant Bay played out a 1-1 draw in the other game.

Fellow debutants Thompson Town were also on the losing end, edged 2-1 by Denbigh in their Zone H encounter.

Yesterday's losses mean that all four newcomers to the competition fell in their opening games after Irwin were beaten on Monday and Iona High on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, one-time winners Cornwall College and 2003 beaten finalists William Knibb became the first teams to score back-to-back wins when they turned back Maldon High and Muschett respectively in Zone A.

Richard Edmundson scored his second of the season while national Under-17 captain Omroy Wilson and André Lee also got among the goals to lead Cornwall 3-0 over Maldon High while William Knibb were 1-0 winners in the Trelawny derby.

There were also wins for last year's beaten finalists Frome Technical and former winners Rusea's High, both in Zone B.

Frome took a long time to settle down before running out easy 1-0 winners over Cambridge thanks to a Keswick Samuels 41st minute goal in muddy conditions.

Frome dominated the game throughout but failed to convert their many chances as Sedane McCreath and Obrian Woodbine were the main culprits.

Rusea's turned back Knockalva 3-1 to assume the lead in the zone ahead of Grange Hill who were 2-0 winners over Merlene Ottey High. Janique Thomas got both goals for Grange Hill.

Meanwhile, Old Harbour High and Islington will be seeking their second wins in three days today when they take on Charlemont and St Mary Technical respectively.

Old Harbour got their quest for their first hold on the title off on a winning note Tuesday with a 4-0 blanking of Ewarton in their Zone J game while Islington edged Annotto Bay 1-0 in a Zone K encounter.

Brimmervale, Zone K winners last season, will be seeking to recover from Tuesday's surprise loss to Tacky when they visit debutants Iona and will be confident they can take three points.
