Soldier arrested in ammunition bust

JAMAICA DEFENCE Force (JDF) soldier, Sergeant John Joseph Allen was on Wednesday night arrested by the police and charged with illegal possession of ammunition.

A raid conducted on Allen's Camp View apartment on South Camp Road, Kingston, netted 407 M-16 rounds, 25 AK-47 rounds and fifty 9mm rounds.

A statement from the JDF said the army had been investigating the sergeant for some time and called in the police when it became apparent that his activities were in breach of the civil law.

RESIDENCE SEARCHED

The police, assisted by the JDF's military Police, conducted a search of the sergeant's residence wherein the ammunition was found, the statement said.

The JDF says it continues to assist the police with their investigation in addition to conducting its own probe into the matter.

McArthur Sutherland, Acting Deputy Superintendent of the St. Andrew Central Police Division is leading the investigations on the part of the police.
