THE BARBICAN Centre, which many identify as the Loshusan Centre, was officially opened last Thursday evening on its grounds at 29 East Kings House Road, St. Andrew. Master of ceremonies, Michael-Anthony Cuffe, in his usual suave manner, got the ball rolling with commentary on the centre and those responsible for its construction, particularly, Mr. Ken Loshusan.

Rev. Dave Hazel of the Shortwood United Church blessed the ceremony and the complex. Delroy Chuck, Member of Parliament for North East St. Andrew - the constituency in which the centre is located - gave greetings on behalf of the surrounding communities and noted, "the centre will serve most conveniently for residents in and outside of the Barbican area." He lauded owner Ken Loshusan for his efforts to develop the community and to bring investment opportunities to Jamaica.

OPT FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Guest speaker William 'Bill' Clarke, the president and CEO of the Bank of Nova Scotia Jamaica Limited, in a thought-provoking presentation, spoke mainly of the need for more Jamaicans to opt for entrepreneurship. "The most effective way to build wealth is by entrepreneurship," he said. He noted that too many persons took on a job-seeking attitude rather than a job-creation one.

He encouraged persons to take lessons from the Progressive Grocers Group, who are partly responsible or the centre, as they are pioneers in the Jamaican business landscape.

He expressed confidence in the future prospects of the centre.

In her vote of thanks, Brenda Alexander, the managing director of Monarch Pharmacy, expressed gratitude to all who had invested in the project and lauded Ken Loshusan for his leading role in executing its development.

Following the unveiling of a plaque at the front of the Loshusan Supermarket, guests were taken on a tour of the new centre by the property manager Dennis Chung. The Barbican Centre has 13 establishments: Loshusan Supermarket, Acropolis Gaming Suites, Ambrosia Restaurant, Super Cleaners, Monarch Pharmacy, Häagen-Dazs, Party Experience, Copy Cat, Compact Travel, Movie Shac, Celli-Shac, The Toy Store and Velma's Flowers & Gifts.
