WEST INDIES wicketkeeper/batsman Carlton Baugh Jnr. scored an undefeated half century to lead Melbourne to the 2005 Capital and Credit limited-overs title after beating Manchester by six wickets under the Duckworth/Lewis System at Chedwin Park yesterday.
Final scores in the one-day final which was held up by rain for almost 3 1/2 hours: Manchester 193 for seven off 46 overs. Melbourne 160 for four from 27.4 overs.
Melbourne were set a target of 169 to win in 29 overs when play resumed at 3:40.
Batting at No. 4, Baugh came to the crease with the score at 29-2 and soon after it was 39-3 with Aubrey Wollaston, four, Marlon Samuels, five, and Damion Henry, 26, all back in the pavilion.
However, Baugh, nicknamed 'Half-a-man', and Yanick Elliott, 14, compiled an important 81 runs for the fourth wicket before the latter sacrificed his wicket for Baugh who called him for a quick single.
EIGHT DELIVERIES TO SPARE
Baugh was then joined by his captain Llewelyn Meggs and the two took their team to victory with eight deliveries to spare.
Baugh, who hit Ziggy Levy for successive sixes and a four to wrap up the match in style, was not out on 93. Baugh's 75-ball knock was laced with five sixes and six fours while Meggs was not out on six.
Earlier, Manchester who elected to bat, were in early trouble after losing Gary Graham, one, Orville Pennant, 16, and Donovan Sinclair, 0, at 48 for 3.
However, despite the breakdown in the top order, captain Matthew Sinclair, who opened the innings, stood firm scoring his second half century in two weeks. He added 78 for the fourth wicket with Levy who chipped in with 49.
Sinclair's dismissal at 126 triggered a middle-order collapse as Manchester slipped from 125-3 to 149-7.
Domaine Sangster, Manchester's hero in last weekend's semi-final against JDF, again came good at the end scoring a quick-fire 26 not out before the rain came at 12:20 p.m. Andre McCarty, with 3-71 off 10 overs, was Melbourne's best bowler.
