Penalty miss, disallowed goal steal limelight
published: Monday | September 19, 2005

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

A MISSED penalty by Fitzroy Anglin and a disallowed goal by referee Courtney Campbell highlighted the 0-0 draw between Constant Spring and Boys' Town in their Wray and Nephew National Premier League (NPL) game at The Spring Complex yesterday.

Captain Anglin, who scored a penalty in each of Boys' Town's two previous games, missed a crucial third in the 69th minute and three valuable points.

However, credit must by given to Constant Spring's goalkeeper, Ralston Robinson, who dived well to his right to make the penalty save and give his team a share of the points on a wet and soggy outfield.

Earlier, the home team thought they had a legitimate goal after Boys' Town's goalkeeper, Kirk Porter, failed to hold onto Denzil Mitchell's shot and Jermaine Richards reacted quickest to slot home.

To the amazement of the spectators though, especially the Constant Spring bench, referee Campbell disallowed the goal after his assistant indicated offside.

Evon Headley, who was having an outstanding game for Constant Spring in the middle of the park, was red carded in the 71st minute after elbowing former Constant Spring captain Fabian Watkins in the face.

ALLEGIANCE SWITCHING

Watkins and Garfield Gillespie, who represented Constant Spring last season, were returning to their old club after switching allegiance to join the Red Brigade and both were recepients of some crunching tackles.

Christopher Bender, coach of Constant Spring, visibly upset by the disallowed goal, argued constantly with the assistant referee for a logical explanation but thought his team gave a creditable performance.

"Overall it was a good performance but the result was not in our favour. When you look at the game overall, it was an even first half but in second half we came out much more spirited and made a lot of passes," said Bender.

Meanwhile, Andrew Price, coach of Boys' Town, who was having his third consecutive game away from home, was grateful for the point.

"We wanted to collect three points, but it's all good to collect a point away from home. I think the boys fought gallantly but we are still not converting our opportunities."

Boys' Town now have four points from three games after beating Wadadah and losing to Tivoli on the opening day, while Constant Spring garnered their second point of the season.
