Bullets sweep Classic finals
published: Monday | September 19, 2005

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

WAULGROVIANS BULLETS downed the Metrobelles 66-49 in Game Two of the best-of-three Jamaica Basketball Association (JBA) DHL Classic finals, to complete a 2-0 series sweep and lift the women's league trophy at the National Stadium courts on Saturday night.

Led by another strong performance from power forward Oberon Pitterson, who scored 24 points and grabbed five rebounds, the Bullets, who had struggled to pull out a one-point victory in Game One on Thursday night, had no such problems on Saturday as they handed the less experienced Metrobelles a 17-point flogging.

"We played a first game that was very competitive, we reviewed the game and we saw what we had to do to nullify their offence, while improving ours," Waulgrovians coach and president of the Jamaica Basketball Association, Marland Nattie, said.

There was very little separating the teams in the first quarter, which ended 13-12. But in the second quarter Pitterson went to work in the key and the Metrobelles struggled to contain her as she bumped and muscled her way to dominating the paint and they increased their lead to 30-24 at half-time.

By the end of the third quarter they raced to a 48-36 lead and never eased up.

"We came out wanting to put the ball into the paint but they didn't allow us to play our game. The early turnovers got us unsettled, we tried to come back at the end of the third quarter but by that time the game was out of our reach," Metrobelles coach Kevin Alexander said.

Christina Mitchell top scored for the Belles with 24 points, while Aleesa Skervin chipped in with 12.
