Fugitive wanted in murder conspiracy arrested in Ja
published: Tuesday | September 20, 2005

BERMUDA:

A JAMAICAN fugitive wanted by police in Bermuda on five counts of conspiracy to murder, was captured by police on Friday in St. Thomas.

Vernon Eugenie Berkley, 56, of Wilmington, St. Thomas, was captured by members of the Fugitive Apprehension Team and the St. Thomas Police in Morant Bay, St. Thomas, the Jamaica Radio website reported yesterday.

FACING EXTRADITION

Berkley is facing extradition to Bermuda where he will stand trial on five counts of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to obstruct, prevent and pervert or defeat the course of justice.

He is scheduled to appear in court in St. Thomas today before being flown to Bermuda. It's believed Berkley is the third suspect in a matter which happened on or about November 29, 2004 in which two other men, Kenneth Sinclair Durrant, 53, and Javon Ernest Gardner, 27, were arrested.

Both Durrant and Gardner pleaded not guilty to the five counts of conspiracy to murder three police officers and two other men in November of last year.

The pair faced one count each of conspiracy to murder in relation to each of the five alleged intended victims: Police Sgt. Arthur Glasford, P.C Terry Trott; P.C. Llewellyn Edwards; Sharrieff Wales and Dion Ford.

In addition to the five counts of conspiracy to murder, Durrant of Ord Road, Warwick, and Gardner of Crossfield Lane, Sandys, also pleaded not guilty to attempting to defeat and pervert the course of justice.

They are currently being held on remand until their trial begins on November 2.
