Spectacular Fuller goal snatches draw for Southampton
published: Tuesday | September 20, 2005

FULLER

LONDON, CMC:

JAMAICA INTERNATIONAL Ricardo Fuller connected with a spectacular last minute goal that snatched a 2-2 draw for Southampton against Derby in the English League Championship (Division One) on Sunday afternoon.

Fuller, who also assisted on Southampton's first goal, put the seal on a gripping finish to a game that had seemed destined to go to Derby, who had the on-loan Trinidad and Tobago international Stern John in their line-up on debut for them, coming from Coventry City.

Southampton led from early in the second half but two quick goals sent Derby ahead 2-1 with five minutes remaining and it took Fuller's adroit 90th minute effort to give Southampton a share of the points.

In the 58th minute, Fuller found space and fed a clever backheel to Brett Ormerod, who calmly side-footed the ball past goalkeeper Lee Camp.

Derby had Camp to thank for preventing Saints grabbing a second, Camp saving well at his near post from Fuller's volley.

Derby appeared to have snatched a victory as they came from behind to lead thanks to Inigo Idiakez's penalty in the 80th minute and a point-blank Andrew Davies header in the 85th minute.

But Fuller's superbly-taken lobbed volley earned Southampton an unlikely point in a frantic second-half.

In the last minute of normal time, Southampton's Dennis Wise escaped the offside trap to challenge Camp for the bouncing ball.

Camp advanced out of his area and headed the ball clear, 35 yards from goal but Fuller was on hand to hit a precise volley, bouncing high into the corner of the Derby net.
