ON THE lush green lawns of the Whispering Bamboo Hotel in St. Thomas, four hardworking Jamaicans from the County of Surrey were yesterday honoured with the Governor-General's Achievement Award.

The four were Errol Greene, head of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), Frank Lawrence, a successful businessman, Neville Wright, a respected pastor and humanitarian and Gloria Brown-Fairweather, a missionary with a special love for helping others.

The four were nominated by their peers and were honoured for their achievements and contributions to society, having come from humble beginnings.

Governor-General Sir Howard Cooke was his usual upbeat self as he praised the award recipients for their work in helping others.

HELPING TO BUILD JAMAICA

"You are helping to build the great fortress called Jamaica. In your own ways you have been helping to show that goodness, mercy and truth must prevail. Count yourselves among those who are instruments of God's purpose," he said.

All the award recipients were hailed for their dedication to helping others. In Mr. Greene's response on behalf of the group, he said they were accepting the awards on behalf of all those who see it as their duty to help others and serve their country.

"Our presence is only a representation of the many who have contributed to the development of Jamaica and to them, we say thank you. We hope that we will continue to prove worthy of the confidence you have bestowed upon us," he said.

This is the 13th year of the Governor-General's Achievement Awards, which aims to put the spotlight on the unsung heroes from across the country who demonstrate true patriotism and love for their fellow man.
