THE EDITOR, Sir
IT IS with deep regret that I read of MP Devon McDaniel's decision not to further represent in Parliament the people of Southern Trelawny beyond the expiration of his current term. Mr McDaniel's decision is apparently spurred by his frustration and disappointment with the Westminster system of government as is operated in Jamaica.
While I sympathise with the young Mr McDaniel, it is rather unfortunate that he would seek to desist from offering further political 'representation' at this time rather than to continue extending or attempting such 'representation' with a view towards assisting with the political/constitutional reform process that is so well needed in Jamaica.
As Mr. McDaniel has contended, he is supportive of certain proposals by Opposition Leader Bruce Golding, which are aimed at improving the political process in Jamaica, specifically such as the one that Members of Parliament be put in a position to actually 'represent' the interests of the people by whom they were elected and for whose interests they should seek to represent.
Mr. McDaniel is capable of assisting with these fundamental reforms, but his decision to not seek further political representation leaves the process with one less voice and mind to facilitate this process.
I am, etc.,
