THE EDITOR, Sir:
IN RECENT months the people of Jamaica have been complaining about the new increase in bus fares, especially the mother who has children who take the bus to school, while they themselves have to travel a two-way zone, paying two fares to get to work and having to make do with a minimum wage. It is obvious that everyone is feeling the cost of living, but we also have to think constructively of how this fare hike affects the low-income family.
On one of the talk shows, I overheard a woman who was telling her story of the cost to her paying two fares to work, so in actuality she is paying four fares per day on a salary of $2,400.
Since the fare has to be increased, then the bus company should implement a programme by adding transfers to the connecting buses. Persons using two buses in any direction should request a transfer the moment they enter the bus. That will allow them to continue on to their destination. I do feel it will not solve all the problems to the fullest but at least every little helps.
Notwithstanding, we have to think of the children who are being supported by only one parent who is already struggling with the little he or she earns.
I am, etc.,
