WHIZ KIDS - Studying with focused students pays off for Neveta Sutherland
published: Thursday | September 29, 2005

Joseph Cunningham, Gleaner Writer

SUTHERLAND

NEVETA SUTHERLAND is sociable, she has many friends, and parties are her forte. Nevertheless, it is an aptitude to make friends with those who will have a positive influence on her that keeps her focused.

A 6B (lower six) student at Campion College and a resident of Gregory Park, St. Catherine, Neveta informed The Gleaner that she was extremely shocked when her CSEC exam results showed eight distinctions and a credit (2).

"I am a normal teenager, I love to have fun," she said. She added that "although I studied and tried my best to prepare for the exams, I would not say that I had become a 'book worm'."

She successfully negotiated mathematics, English A & B, biology, physics, chemistry, principles of business, Spanish and French examinations. Neveta attributes her high achievement to studying with very focused students that she says helped her to stay on track with her studies, and avoid the stress of studying under pressure.

INTERACT WITH PEOPLE

Despite maintaining that she is a typical teen, Neveta showed glimpses of her maturity when she commented on the issue of crime and violence in the country.

"I interact with people of all sorts. It does not matter what level you are at," she said. "Being able to communicate with all people is very important, but the situation in our society does not allow this! The crime and violence is unnecessary. We need to stop and think; learn to forgive each other!"

After that outburst, The Gleaner asked this enigmatic ' honour role' student, what is your professional aspiration?

"I love the languages," she said, "and so I aspire to pursue a professional career primarily as a linguist."

A linguist is a person who speaks several languages fluently.

She made a special request that her mother, Althea Smith and her teachers, see her expression of gratitude, before adding: "Without them I do not know what I would do."

Neveta claims that she loves to sleep and to eat, and loves listening to music.
