PSOJ fund to supply police with forensic equipment
published: Thursday | September 29, 2005

THE PRIVATE Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) has handed over a wish list from the Ministry of National Security to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), to purchase forensic equipment for the police in their fight against crime.

Lola Fong-Wright, CEO of the PSOJ, said that she received the list of items from Gilbert Scott, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, on September 16.

She said that most of the requests are for forensic apparatus which will be bought with money from a fund that was established by the PSOJ in the aftermath of the organisation's peace rally at Emancipation Park in May.

GraceKennedy donated $5 million to the fund.

"We've given them (the police) instructions to purchase the equipment. Once they order them, we will expedite the funds," Ms. Fong-Wright told The Gleaner.

On Tuesday, Beverley Lopez, president of the PSOJ, said several private sector companies had given the police support in various ways. She said the Carib Cement Company had donated 1,000 bags of cement to the JCF while other organisations were helping to repair dilapidated police stations.

Recently, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields said the JCF needed state-of-the-art DNA and fingerprint machines to help in tracking criminals.
