A SECOND-half strike by substitute Alberto Fray led Constant Spring to a welcome 1-1 draw with visitors Wadadah in Wray and Nephew National Premier League action at the Constant Spring Complex yesterday.
Visitors Wadadah, looking to rebound from a 3-1 loss to Waterhouse on Sunday, took the game to the home team from the opening whistle. They surged ahead in the 25th minute when a promising build-up saw the ball eventually fall on the boot of Oliver Trail.
He then played a well-weighted through ball between defenders for striker Jermaine Anderson, who got around custodian Ralston Robinson and calmly roll his third goal of the season into the back of the net.
The goal put Constant Spring on the back foot and they struggled, much to the annoyance of their spectators, to get going offensively. But the second half introduction of Fray saw the game change for the home team.
Fray, who came on for Jermaine Reid in the 46th minute, played inspirational football from the moment he arrived on the pitch. His runs down the left flank for Constant Spring gave them an entirely different dimension as they picked up the pace of their attacks in search of the crucial equaliser.
The leveller would come in the 70th minute when a set piece saw Fray break through the Wadadah backline and fire past Wadadah goalkeeper Gavin Barrett at his near post.
Constant Spring coach Christopher Bender said the game was a tale of two halves. "We played in patches, we didn't play well in the first half. But in the second half we dominated in yet another game but we only have a tie to show for it. We got a lot of chances but we could not finish today," Bender lamented.
Anthony Williams, coach of Wadadah, while glad his team could come away with a point believes it could have done a lot better.
"A point away from home is always good, but we had a lot opportunities in the first half which we did not capitalise upon," Williams said.
He hinted there may be a few changes the next time the team takes the field.
"We have players who are not stepping up to the plate and obviously we need to do something about that. We can't have quality players not performing and come the next game you may see a couple of new faces," he said.
The draw sees Wadadah remain in 10th place with four points. For Constant Spring, the result sees them advance to three points from five games and goals have been hard to come by. In fact, Fray's strike was their first goal in three outings and that is a major concern for Bender.
"We need to have more quality players available up front. We get anxious in the box and we don't always make good decisions," he said
The suspension of veteran striker Walter Boyd for arriving late at one team meeting and missing another would not have helped this case. The team also missed inspiration midfielder Denzil Mitchell who was unavailable due to injury.
