Throwing garbage through bus windows
published: Friday | September 30, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

LAST WEEK I happened to be travelling along the Stony Hill Road behind a Coaster bus filled with passengers and, once out of Constant Spring, I was startled by what I saw. Things ranging from fast food containers such as boxes, bags, cups, food drink cans, were tossed from the bus on to the streets. I decided to slow down and maintain several cars length from this vehicle as I could be in peril. This continued all the way up the hill where well over 20 potential missiles were hurled on to both sides of the road.

When we continue to litter the streets with garbage, whom do we expect to walk behind us and clean up? Where were the adults on the bus? How much longer are we going to continue to turn a blind eye? I am astonished to see that nowadays adults and children alike do not have a problem with throwing garbage through the bus and even car windows. Ever so often I see seemingly decent people walk or drive and throw things into the gullies and roadways. This I find very aggravating to the point that I often have to stop and say something to them. This is absolute nastiness. There are lots of bins around and even if there is none in view, how hard can it be to put the garbage in your bags and dispose of it when you reach a bin or your destination?

I am appealing to the school children not to follow those lawless adults and others who do not care. Please desist from littering our roadways.

I am, etc.,
