Kicking up a storm for Village
published: Saturday | October 1, 2005

NATIONAL ATTACKER, Fabian Dawkins, is the biggest reason for the optimism in Trelawny football and more specifically, Falmouth's Village United.

After three games in the first round, Village were scoreless and winless and looked perilously close to securing place in the relegation zone in the first round of the Wray and Nephew National Premier League.

The pride of Trelawny now find themselves closer to respectability. Dawkins has scored five goals in his two games thus far.

In his first game against Montego Bay team Seba United on Sunday, after returning to the island on Thursday, he fired Village ahead. When Seba hit back with two strikes of their own and looked almost certain to take three valuable points, the man nicknamed 'Ronaldo' popped up to equalise and secured a point for his team.

HAT-TRICK

If Sunday's performance were not enough, he eclipsed that with a hat-trick three days later against the mighty Waterhouse firing his team to a 4-1 win. Prior to the Dawkins massacre, Waterhouse came into the game with intentions of taking over sole leadership of the competition after a three-game winning streak put them level on nine points with Harbour View and Arnett Gardens at the top of the table. Dawkins' rampaging performance put an end to that dream.

With his five goals, Dawkins is now the top scorer in the league ahead of Harbour View's Lovel Palmer (four goals). The performance of the player, who created history in 2001 when he became the first Jamaican player to score a goal in a Youth World Cup finals, has not gone unnoticed as he was promptly recalled to the national squad for friendly against Guatemala this weekend.

With the output above, Dawkins who just completed a prolific season in the United Soccer League (USLA) First Division where he finished second leading goalscorer with 15 from 27 games, was shoo-in for 'Performer of the Week'.
