Calabar, Dunoon draw
published: Wednesday | October 5, 2005

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

A 10-MAN Calabar team battled its way to a 0-0 draw against visitors Dunoon Technical in yesterday's Group B encounter of the ISSA/Pepsi/JN Manning Cup at Calabar High.

The home team was in trouble from as early as the fifth minute when wily midfielder Ramone Palmer was given his marching orders for extending his arm to strike an opponent during play.

Calabar coach David Hunt felt hard done by the red card and took the time after the game out to commend his team for a gutsy performance.

"I am proud of them. They stuck to the task and they fought very hard for the result. I don't think Palmer deserved a red card but that's how it is sometimes and you just have to work with it," Hunt said.

COMPETENT PLAYERS

"We have competent players to put out there, we train a team and not just one player, so we should be fine," he said of the possibility of not having Palmer for the next game.

In fact, 10-man Calabar did well against Dunoon and had the better opportunities to snatch the three points.

The most notable chance came seconds before the final whistle. Kenniel Hyde found himself with a golden opportunity all alone in front of goal but his feet seemed to slip from under him and his shot curled away over the crossbar, leaving the Calabar faithful to put their hands to their heads in anguish.

Dunoon coach Standford Patrick was glad that his team came away with a point.

"A point away from home is always very good, but we haven't been able to play for a while due to the rain and I think we were a bit match rusty," Patrick said.

The draw sees Calabar remain at the top of Group B with 16 points.
