Powell ... claimed four wickets in losing effort. - FILE
CRAB HILL, Barbados, CMC:
RAWL LEWIS played the cliched 'captain's innings' to lead Windward Islands to a four-wicket victory in their second-round match of the 2005 WICB President's Trophy limited-overs series against Jamaica yesterday at the North Stars Cultural and Social Club.
Chasing a revised target of 230 runs from 43 overs, after rain interrupted play, the Windwards hit the jackpot with 17 balls to spare, when Lewis essayed a searing cut off left-arm spin bowler Nikita Miller for the last of his 10 fours.
Lewis, the Windwards captain, finish with an undefeated 65 from 47 balls. He also hit one six that helped him to earn the Man-of-the-Match award, after his side dipped to 176 for six, and looked in danger of giving up the ghost.
SUFFERED CRAMPS
Long-standing wicket-keeper/batsman Junior Murray helped to set up the victory with half-dozen boundaries in 53 from 77 balls, and batted through the later stages of his innings with a runner, after suffering cramps.
Murray shared 70 for the first wicket with left-handed West Indies opening batsman Devon Smith, who struck nine fours in 43 from 29 balls.
West Indies speedster Daren Powell was the most successful Jamaica bowler with four wickets for 64 runs from seven overs, but his costly last over, in which he conceded 15 runs, practically gave the match away.
Opening batsman Brenton Parchment and West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels had hit half-centuries and added 97 for the second wicket to pave the way for Jamaica's total of 254 for eight off 50 overs.
Parchment hit eight fours and one six in the top score of 65 from 102 balls, and Samuels hit 54 from 77 balls that included three fours and one six.
Darren Sammy, who played a couple of limited-overs internationals for the West Indies last year, was the pick of the Windwards' bowlers with four wickets for 49 runs from 10 overs.
EXCITING STROKES
Smith then played some exciting strokes to give Windwards an enterprising start with Murray before he was caught behind off Dave Bernard, Jnr., top-edging a cut in the ninth over. Craig Emmaniel joined Murray and batted circumspectly to add 48 for the second wicket before he was caught behind for 21 in the 22nd over to leave Windwards on 118 for two. Just when things looked like they were getting away from the Jamaicans, Powell returned for a second spell and removed Murray caught at mid-wicket, as well as Daren Sammy and Sergio Fedee to lbw decisions for a first-ball duck and six respectively.
Powell then added the scalp of Liam Sebastien caught behind for six before Lewis took charge, and led his team to their promised land.
Earlier, Jamaica made very slow progress before Mervyn Matthew made the breakthrough in the 12th over, when he removed Wavell Hinds caught behind for seven.
Samuels came to the wicket, and got the Jamaicans on track with Parchment.
They batted with purpose, mixing agile running between the wickets with the occasional stroke of petulance.
Matthew spectacularly caught Samuels on the long-off boundary off Sammy in the 34th over, when he leapt two feet into the air, and plucked the ball out of the air, much to the delight of his teammates.
FIRST-BALL DUCK
Two balls later, Sammy had Carlton Baugh, Jr., caught at third man for a first-ball duck, when the batsman top-edged a cut at a short, rising ball.
When Parchment gave a gentle return catch to Sammy in the 36th over, it left Jamaica on 157 for four in the 36th over. Tamar Lambert scored 42 from 41 balls that included four fours, and Bernard made 33 from 29 balls that contained three fours and one six got them back on course with a stand of 56 for the fifth wicket.
After Bernard was bowled slogging at a delivery from Sebastien in the 45th over, the Windwards bowlers restricted the Jamaican tail-enders to 39 runs from their last five overs. Windwards now top the standings with nine points, and Jamaica are without a point.
