'Babsy' Grange shot at
published: Friday | October 7, 2005

GRANGE

A CAR in which Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) MP for Central St. Catherine Olivia 'Babsy' Grange was travelling was shot up about 6:30 p.m. yesterday in Spanish Town.

Ms. Grange who was visibly shaken said: "I can't believe I'm alive as I was sitting in the back of the car. When I heard the explosions the only thing I could do was tell the driver to drive." She also showed a reporter holes in the back of the vehicle presumably caused by bullets.

Following the shooting, two men were hospitalised, one in serious condition.

The man who is said to be in critical condition, is Omar Campbell also called 'Tickerus', 28, of Tawes Pen, St. Catherine. He was shot in the abdomen and upper region of his body. The other man, who is about 25 years old, had not been identified up to press time last night.

The Gleaner was told that a three-hour peace meeting was held earlier with Ms. Grange, Sharon Hay-Webster, the Member of Parliament for South Central St. Catherine, the police and other leaders from both the 'One Order' and 'Clansman' gangs at the St. Catherine Parish Council building between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Police reports are that the convoy with Ms. Grange was proceeding along Church Street when upon reaching the corner of Wellingston Street, a man on foot started firing shots, hitting Campbell and the other man on a bike. The two had pulled up beside Ms. Grange's car. They both fell and were taken to hospital.
