KSAC may quiet some hot spots in New Kgn
published: Friday | October 7, 2005

MAYOR OF Kingston, Desmond McKenzie, says the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) may not renew the licences of some places of amusement in New Kingston.

The mayor, who was speaking yesterday at the launch of Kingston Restaurant Week, said the council has received several complaints from residents who live close to some entertainment spots in New Kingston about night noise.

He said the KSAC will take a resolution to the council next month that licences for places of amusement should not be renewed unless those establishments can satisfy the KSAC that the noise coming from the establishments will not disturb persons who live in close proximity to where they operate.

"People have to understand, if you go out to enjoy yourself, it can't be at the expense of those persons who have to go about their normal business."

CONDITIONS CAN'T CONTINUE

"The conditions that exist in New Kingston after 5:30 p.m. can't continue anymore; vehicular traffic is at a great disadvantage, the sidewalks are taken over," McKenzie stated.

The tough-talking mayor said the council will be taking action against business operations in New Kingston that continue to use the sidewalk for parking.

He also issued a warning for persons who continue to park in spaces reserved for disabled persons. He said violators will be fined $10,500.

The mayor pointed out that the entire New Kingston area was a no vending area, and jerk chicken vendors who peddle their products on sidewalks are violators of this code.
