Norman Manley Int'l mourns colleagues
published: Friday | October 7, 2005

Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

MORALE AT the Airlift Handlers department of the Norman Manley International Airport, Kingston, was low yesterday, as staff members mourned the loss of four of their colleagues who perished in a motor vehicle accident on Tuesday.

Reports are that Cheddie Thomas, Devon Smith, Ian Stephenson and Weston Wilson, were among seven members of staff heading home from work in a jovial mood when tragedy struck.

The vehicle in which they were travelling collided with a Town Ace van along Waltham Park Road, St. Andrew. Thomas, Smith and Stephenson died on the spot, while Wilson later succumbed to injuries at hospital.

"The driver and another staff member escaped with minor injuries, while another staff member is still hospitalised," said a co-worker who identified herself only as Nordia.

She said the incident has left them saddened and that things will never be the same again.

"I shared the last joke with Smith (Devon) on Tuesday. That was the last time we spoke," said Nordia.

MOTORIST STILL BEING SOUGHT

The female motorist who was driving the Town Ace van, fled the scene and is still being sought by the police. Contacted yesterday, head of the Police Traffic Division, Senior Superintendent Elan Powell, said he was awaiting a report from the Accident Investigation Re-Construction Unit.
