Plea-bargaining bill final draft next week
published: Friday | October 7, 2005

PARLIAMENT'S JOINT Select Committee considering new plea bargaining legislation, wrapped up its deliberations on Wednesday and is to sign off on the final draft next Wednesday.

This will pave the way for the re-introduction of the Criminal Justice, Plea Negotiations and Agreements Bill in the Houses of Parliament.

The bill formalises the system of plea negotiations currently in use in the legal system.

Accused persons will be able to negotiate for a lesser charge, have punishment for a particular crime reduced or have charges against them dropped in exchange for information that may assist in solving crimes or catching henchmen and crime lords.
