EITHER PEOPLE really respect Dr. Charles Denbow or there are many people worried about their hearts.

Either way, the crowd at Eden Gardens was rather heavy for a book launch. Noted cardiologist Dr. Charles Denbow launched The Clinician's Guide to the Cardiovascular Examination last Friday. At first glance, the subject matter sounds like heavy stuff. But it's not a children's novel and the topic is not a fairy tale. With heart disease at the heights it is in the Caribbean, this book is timely.

Numerous members of the medical fraternity turned out to support their colleague. The occasion was more special because this was the first book launched out of the Medical Faculty of the University of the West Indies, where Denbow has taught for over 30 years. The book-signing was an understandably lengthy process as everyone wanted the physician's autograph.

PLENTY OF PRAISE

Once the 'official' proceedings got under way, there was plenty of praise for 'Charlie'. Dr. Archibald McDonald felt the book was "going to be read and utilised by medical students across the Caribbean." He felt that the field of cardiology was so intensive, physicians and students must grasp the techniques.

There was a Caribbean flair to the evening as Dr. Denbow hails from the shores of Guyana. Sighted a few of his countrymen in the gathering including UWI Vice Chancellor E. Nigel Harris. Harris couldn't expostulate enough about his old friend. He talked about Charlie's work including his time in the United Kingdom and about his life; being a family man.
