Improving Spanish Town blank Ascot 3-0
published: Friday | October 7, 2005

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

SPANISH TOWN defeated Ascot 3-0 Group F action as the Pepsi/JN Manning Cup first round continued at Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

Dervas Willis in the 27th minute, Ranique Rowe in the 81st and Mario Miller's 84th minute strike, handed Spanish Town their third victory of the season.

They now join Ascot on 10 points, but are still three points behind Wolmer's (13 points) in the group.

Spanish Town's first goal came from a 20-yard free kick from Willis which deflected off the wall and beat 'keeper Gary Miller.

The rest of the half played out rather sedately in the wet and muddy conditions as neither side threatened.

In the second half, Spanish Town looked the better team, though they weren't rewarded with their second goal until late.

Spanish Town's second gaol came when Ascot's goalkeeper and defence made a mess of a cross in the area, which Rowe converted from close range.

The third and final goal came when Miller and Ricardo Francis combined brilliantly before the former fired home from inside the area.

A happy Spanish Town coach, Cecil Thomas, said his team played to instruction.

"We really needed these three points ... We need the guys to play a disciplined game and lift themselves and they did just that," Thomas said. Losing coach, Vance Grant, said that despite the loss he was proud of his team in the wet conditions.

"Our boys fought with character, but we just needed that little extra drive. They played a disciplined game, however, the conditions of the field due the the inclement weather hampered us tremendously."
