Manning Cup - Missing medical staff adds more pain to Holy Trinity

Holy Trinity High's Chad Henry (left) puts up a high boot to play the ball, while Eltham High's Dwayne Hunter (right) takes evasive action and his teammate Jermaine Stewart looks on during their ISSA/Pepsi/JN Manning Cup game at Breezy Castle Centre yesterday. Eltham won 4-0.

TEN MINUTES after the final whistle, Xavier Fuller of Holy Trinity was motionless, still lying face down, obviously in distress from what appeared to be a back injury after a crunching tackle. There was no medical staff in attendance.

Fuller's coach, Oscar Wright, placed a pack of ice on his back, but the concerned look on his face said it all. He was a worried man.

Fuller was injured during the Group E, Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association ISSA/Pepsi/JN Manning Cup match at Breezy Castle Centre, where Eltham High thrashed Holy Trinity High 4-0 yesterday.

There was no team doctor or physiotherapist around up to the time when The Gleaner team was leaving, with the youngster writhing in pain.

That was the sour note as Eltham High's made a giant step towards qualification for the quarter-finals.

Goals by the outstanding Jermaine Stewart (36th), Kemar Crowther (68th), Rayon Whyte (77th) and substitute Deloran McKenzie propelled the Spanish Town-based school to 16 points, five behind runaway leaders Bridgeport on 21 points and three ahead of the chasing Kingston College (KC) on 13.

Both Eltham and KC have a game in hand against each other that will be their biggest game of the season in deciding second spot in the group.

COACH SATISFIED

Winning coach, Gregory Allen, of Eltham High, which was winning their fourth game in six matches, says he was satisfied with the victory and is now looking forward to the second round.

"Most definitely we are eyeing the second round. We are not in the competition just to compete," said Allen confidently.

"They came out with a purpose and they delivered. I am satisfied, but there are some lapses, especially in the goalscoring department," he added.

Meanwhile, losing coach, Oscar Wright was in no mood for interviews as he was busy attending to Fuller on the sideline.
