Chuck: Fire Phillips now
published: Monday | October 10, 2005

OPPOSITION SPOKESMAN on Justice, Delroy Chuck, yesterday called for the resignation of Minister of National Security, Peter Phillips, for the part he played in the joint police-military operation in the West Kingston constituency last week.

Mr. Chuck made the call while addressing the Jamaica Labour Party Area Council One meeting at the Tarrant High School in St. Andrew.

He said that what took place during the operation in Tivoli Gardens were human rights abuses.

"... And what is worse, is that nobody is sanctioned, nobody is fired, nobody is laid off, nobody takes responsibility and so much failure, injustice and abuses are carried out and nobody takes responsibility. The Minister of National Security must resign!" he said.

Mr. Chuck argued that Dr. Phillips must have known about the curfew, which was carried out in Tivoli because the Minister of National Security has to sign the documents that allows curfews to take place.

"The security forces would never have gone into Tivoli with that amount of armour, with that amount of men, without the Minister of National Security knowing," he claimed.

Mr. Chuck also hinted that the Government could be faced with more human rights claims from the men who were forced to lie down on marl during the operation.
