WESTERN BUREAU:
CHEERS AND applause broke out in Falmouth Water Square as an alleged gunman terrorising the town was nabbed with his sawed-off shotgun and am-munition on Friday night.
Twenty-four-year-old Fitzroy Reid, otherwise known as 'Fitzie', a mason of Wakeland Drive in Falmouth, has been slapped with firearm and ammunition charges.
"Me very glad the police hold him. Every time is pure 'Pow! Pow!' all over the place, no quietness," a man told The Gleaner shortly after the arrest.
Reports are that Reid was held about 8:00 p.m. by a police team on patrol in the square. It is reported that the accused and two other men were seen and, when they were cornered, ran in different directions. According to an eyewitness, Reid threw the gun into an enclosed area holding a cenotaph near the Falmouth Courthouse.
He was held, searched and a 12-gauge shotgun cartridge found in his pocket. The gun was later recovered with one live round. The crowd, which converged on the scene, applauded the police on the capture.
Eyewitnesses, too scared to speak with this newspaper, were overheard saying that the three men had been earlier brandishing their weapons in an attempt to scare a group of persons with whom they had had a dispute.
