THE EDITOR, Sir:
I HAVE read with keen interest in The Gleaner of September 30, 2005 where Senior Superintendent of Police, Leon Rose, expressed his concern about negotiations with criminal elements about some so-called peace plan. I want to assure Mr. Rose that all well-thinking Jamaicans who respect the rule of law are solid in their resolve with him.
Criminals who break the law with impunity should suffer the consequences of their action.
The police are entrusted to enforce the laws in our society.
Any compromise of that trust would be an act of betrayal of faith on the part of those responsible for law enforcement. How can the call be made for the public to assist in the fight against crime and to give all information to the police about criminals when on the other hand you are negotiating peace treaty and in conference with them?
I say 'bravo' to SSP Rose for the stand he has taken publicly and to reassure him that he is not alone on this issue. Keep up the good work and be courageous in this endeavour and your reward will be assured.
I am, etc.,
