Residents block roads to protest shooting death of 'One Order' member
published: Monday | October 10, 2005

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:

MAJOR ROADBLOCKS were mounted in Spanish Town on Friday, as angry residents swarmed the Old Capital to protest the shooting death of Omar 'Tickerus' Campbell, a well-known lieutenant of the 'One Order' gang which operates out of Tawes Pen and its environs.

Roadblocks were mounted on Upper Young Street, in the vicinity of the Spanish Town funeral home, sections of Cumberland Road and Brunswick Avenue.

CLEANING UP

When The Gleaner news team arrived on the scene, a police team had intervened, and was removing several tyres, old refrigerators and other debris from the roads in a bid to regain normality.

Campbell was one of two men who were shot about 6:30 p.m. Thursday after the entourage of Member of Parliament Olivia 'Babsy' Grange was shot at by a gunman. Campbell died in the Spanish Town Hospital at 1:00 a.m on Friday. The other person shot in the incident has been hospitalised.

On Friday, Opposition senators walked out of Gordon House at the last minute, disgusted at the Senate President's refusal to allow them to speak about the shooting incident involving Ms. Grange. This was the second time this week that Opposition senators walked out of the Parliament building.

On Tuesday, Opposition Leader Bruce Golding claimed the police shot two women standing near him during an operation in his constituency. Leader of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives Derrick Smith, subsequently demanded an opportunity to discuss the matter in the House, but House Speaker Michael Peart refused to allow a discussion based on speculation, leading to a walk out.

General Secretary of the People's National Party, Burchell Whiteman, condemned the shootings that took place in Spanish Town, and specifically the attack on a motor vehicle carrying Ms. Grange.
