Guyana's Agriculture Minister blasts regional counterparts
published: Thursday | October 13, 2005

Damion Mitchell, News Coordinator

GUYANA'S MINISTER of Agriculture Satyadeow Sawh has blasted some regional agriculture ministers for failing to complete critical undertakings in their countries to facilitate the implementation of the Jagdeo Initiative.

Addressing regional agriculture ministers at a Caribbean Agriculture Ministers Alliance Meeting in Basseterre, St. Kitts, on October 6, Mr. Sawh said he was disappointed with the progress that some countries have made.

The Jagdeo Initiative was arrived at in 2004 at a CARICOM Heads Government meeting when president of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo, was mandated to develop a programme for the repositioning of the region's agri-sector.

SPECIFIC ANALYSES

Agriculture ministers were subsequently required to provide specific analyses of the constraints to the development the agri-industries in their countries before a final regional development programme is compiled.

But according to Mr. Sawh, only a few countries have completed the requirements despite the fact that there have been three meetings among agriculture ministers to accelerate the process. This, he said, was unacceptable.
