Jamaica is a failed state
published: Thursday | October 13, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ON OCTOBER 6, I cried myself to sleep after reading about the horrendous fate of 10-year-old Sasha Kay Brown and her family. It was not the first time that an article in The Gleaner had brought tears to my eyes, but I bawled uncontrollably the night of October 6. My beloved island has descended into the deepest depths of barbarity and there is no sign of any change for the better.

It is a government's responsibility to protect its citizens and failure to do so demonstrates incompetence. Jamaica is a failed state with one of the highest murder rates per capita in the world. Yet the outrage at this level of violence is lacking. Jamaicans should be clamouring for the ouster of the Prime Minister as he and his government have failed in their duty to protect the citizenry. Surely, there must be a better alternative.

I am, etc.,
