PRIME MINISTER P.J. Patterson says negotiations with Trinidad and Tobago for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) on concessionary terms will not be affected by the recently signed PetroCaribe agreement with Venezuela.
Mr. Patterson said Trinidad's Prime Minister, Patrick Manning, gave his assurance to proceed with the negotiations at a special Caribbean Community (CARICOM) meeting in Barbados, last week. A team of experts from Trinidad is expected to arrive in the island by the end of this month to continue with talks on the project.
The meeting in Barbados was held to advance discussions on the formation of a regional energy policy and alternative sources of energy such as wind, solar and thermal energy, in light of increasing oil prices. A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said the Barbados meeting also reaffirmed the importance of implementation of the PetroCaribe Initiative with Venezuela, for which Mr. Manning is responsible.
In the meantime, the implementation of the CARICOM Single Market was said to be on track.
