Peter Reckell (Bo Brady).

Peter 'Bo'Reckell on being green

KERMIT THE Frog once sang, "It's not easy being green."

Peter Reckell, who plays Bo Brady on Days of Our Lives, disagrees: at least as far as 'green' refers to being environmentally aware and not to Kermit's complexion.

Reckell and his wife, singer/composer Kelly Moneymaker, are among the growing number of people who believe we need to stop abusing the planet and begin to respect and protect the environment before it's too late to save the Earth and ourselves.

"We're going to reach a point of no return," Reckell says. "And when we do, we won't be able to undo the damage and avoid the consequences of our behaviour."

But, with apologies to Kermit, many people say it really isn't easy being green if you have to live without the "blessings" of modern technology. However, Reckell says no one is asking anyone to go back to cooking his or her food with hot stones or dipping his or her clothes into a river and beating them clean with a rock.

"Not only will people find it easy to be green," Reckell says, "they'll also find they're saving money and becoming healthier at the same time."

Reckell, for example, rides his bicycle nine miles to work, and nine miles back. "It's a great way to stay in shape, and also stay out of traffic jams," he says. "The only exception is for bad weather. And then I take the bus."

Moneymaker and Reckell have been converting their home into a 'green' house. They've installed solar panels, which, he points out, "supply us with free energy from the sun." The couple doesn't use expensive chemical cleaners. "There are a lot of things you can use that don't involve products that harm the environment or put the health of your family and your pets at risk."

Reckell says nature is already warning us that we're dangerously close to the point of no return. "Scientists tell us global warming may be the reason we're seeing so many high-category hurricanes. The climate is changing around the world. And we can't afford to ignore what's happening."

As for what's happening with Bo Brady these days, Reckell says: "He's experiencing the challenge of becoming a father to a daughter (Chelsea) who has only recently come into his life. She's all grown up and has a mind of her own. She and Bo are still getting to know each other. And she's already learned that it's pretty easy to manipulate him, because he wants to please her."

Reckell get any advice from viewers on how Bo should act with Chelsea?

"Oh, sure. They say he has to be firmer with her; he has to assert the fact that he's the father and she's the daughter. But," Reckell chuckles, "while he knows that she knows he's the father, he also wants to be her dad."
