Institute should help on crime

THE EDITOR, Sir:WHEN GUNMEN wreak havoc on our society by committing frightening crimes against humanity, it does not help when you hear blunderings coming out of the Farquharson Institute, such as the criticism levelled against the military chief for his mere suggestion that the army would retaliate if fired upon.
All of a sudden we are being schooled on the letter of the law; as to what the army can and cannot do if attacked by gunmen. People such as Mr. Frank Phipps should be working with the people of Jamaica, the Government and the legislative body in shaping laws which will eliminate the methods of intimidation and oppression used by dons to remain comfortably untouchable.
The Farquharson Institute would be better served if its duties was helping Jamaican society rid itself of criminal elements instead of being always critical of the only line of defence the people of Jamaica have left against itself, the security forces. And even they can hardly defend themselves without being attacked by politicians, the Farquharson Institute and all sorts of so-called human rights agencies. We are left to wonder whose side are these people on. Criminals kill far more innocent people than the police do in cross-fire.
