Oooh, ORCHIDS
published: Sunday | October 16, 2005

ONE OF Thailand's most outstanding features is masses of orchids everywhere from Buddhist shrines to airport terminals. On a recent visit, The Sunday Gleaner toured a farm on the outskirts of the capital, Bangkok. It is owned and operated by Chakachan who has grown the hybrid varieties for 10 years.

Many exporters buy from her for markets in Hawaii, Italy and France.

There are several more orchid farms in Chang Mai in the north and the beds are usually elevated on stilts with roots allowed to grow freely downwards. The technology is fascinating and the rows are clean, not a weed or sign of trash in sight.

Enjoy!
