Anancy story
published: Sunday | October 16, 2005

Arriving on our shores centuries ago

This African folklore Brer Anancy

An imaginary character of an actor

Showing our forefathers how to outwit their

Colonial slavemasters.

Now in his prime,

Surviving technology and primitive times;

He can't be held responsible for modern-day

Crimes but had helped us to relax and unwind

Before bedtime.

The moralist will complain, blaming Anancy

For society's ills and pains, but we must take

Responsibility for our moral development

And growth don't use Brer Anancy as a scapegoat.

He may sometimes take a short route or make

A joke, pull a few strings to make us grin,

When situation seems dim.

Anancy by no means a gangster, mobster,

Villain or politician, don't blame him for

FINSAC, which was financed by the nation's tax.

He may ramp or carry out his pranks, but

Never scamp the bank.

 Anthony Lloyd
