Rain, no play in Manning Cup
published: Sunday | October 16, 2005

Daraine Luton, Freelance Writer

PERSISTENT RAIN resulted in the postponement of all four ISSA/Pepsi/JN Manning Cup games scheduled for yesterday.

Two of these games; Eltam against St. Jago and Bridgeport against Kingston College, if played, would have created a clearer picture as to which team will advance from Group E with the 2001 champions Bridgeport.

Kingston College and Eltham are locked on 17 points, four behind Bridgeport. The 14-time champions Kingston College needed to win and hope Eltham dropped points against St. Jago in order to advance behind Bridgeport. However, their game against Bridgeport failed to get going at Ferdie Neita Park because of a waterlogged field.

In fact, when The Gleaner arrived at the venue at 3:40 p.m., 10 minutes after the schedule start, the only sign of life was a bus full of Tivoli Gardens High School players.

Tivoli were due to tackle Waterford but their game too was affected by rain; likewise the game between Kingston High and St. George's College.

No date has been set for the replays and with the Walker Cup set to start on Friday, ISSA will be hard pressed to pack the games into this week's fixtures.

Competitions Officer George Forbes does not foresee a problem though.

"There is no major problem for us. We are almost certain of the six zone winners and the two best second-place teams should be decided by Wednesday, so it should not affect the start of the Walker Cup," Forbes said.

The six zone winners along with the two best second-place teams will vie for the Walker Cup which currently resides at Excelsior.
